The Trovatello family runs Kyneton Olive Oil, a major grower and processor of olives in Barfold, just south of Redesdale. In 2005 they decided to develop a vineyard. “We saw this as complementing our existing estate establishments in olive oil production and stud cattle breeding,” says Sam Trovatello. Sam and Alvio are the sons of Felice Trovatello who came to Australia from the Italian region of Calabria. “Dad recognised that the climate here was reminiscent of that in Calabria where he lived before coming to Australia. His family owned and operated an olive grove and vineyard there,” says Sam.
The Trovatello family also runs a concrete and quarry business in Melbourne. “We have five family run businesses,” says Sam. “Managing all those is our biggest challenge. We’ve always appreciated fine wines as a family and we decided to have a go at making our own wine. We strive to produce high quality products, whether it is in our concrete and quarry business, olive oil, or cattle production. The wine business is our newest, and we look forward to developing a good reputation for our wine.
“The most enjoyable part of being in the wine business is tasting the vintage with our winemaker prior to bottling each vintage. Do I recommend the wine business to potential entrants? Absolutely yes, but they need to be passionate about it, it’s not about the money.
“We run an open weekend at Kyneton Olive Oil each Queen’s Birthday long weekend. We invite other local food and wine businesses to our premises. We launched our first wine at the 2010 long weekend. It’s always a busy weekend with the wood-fired pizza oven working overtime. We have a lot of returning customers each year, and we’d love to see new ones come up and enjoy the local produce.”
