The nose shows distinctive Viognier lift in the form of orange blossom, honeysuckle and ginger with some gun flint complexity from solids and barrel fermentation. The palate has intense varietal flavour with a creamy texture and well balanced acidity.
Harvest Details: The grapes the for 2012 Tellurian Heathcote Viognier were sourced from a single vineyard on the eastern side of the Mount Camel range in rich Cambrian soil. Viticulturist Tim Brown worked closely with these growers throughout the year to ensure vineyard management and harvesting practices delivered the highest quality fruit for this wine. he 2012 season was close to ideal with reasonable rainfall throughout winter and spring resulting in good early spring canopy growth. January and February were both relatively dry and warm providing ideal ripening conditions. Decent rain events in early March provided moments of concern, although subsequent strong winds dried out the vineyard and provided ideal harvesting conditions. The Viognier grapes were hand harvested in early March, around 13.5 baume.
Winemaking: The winemaking philosophy is one that aims to allow the fruit to have full expression with winemaking and oak inputs playing a supporting role. The grapes were hand picked and then whole bunch pressed with no heavy pressings being used. After settling in tank overnight the juice was transferred to seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation with light solids. The wine remained in barrel on yeast lees for 7 months prior to bottling. The result is a wine that shows typical Viognier varietal character.
