Nero D’Avola hails from the hot, sunny and dry vineyards of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean where they create wines that have inspired our winemaker, Glenn James-Pritchard.

The ancient, red, rocky, volcanic soils in the driest, most northern part of Heathcote form the perfect site for Australia’s introduction to Nero D’Avola.

“Glenn James is a crafty winemaker…Here Nero D’Avola appears brightly flavoured, lighter form with amaro herb spice and cranberry acidity. It’s delicious, vibrant drinking personified.”

The grapes for this premium wine were grown on the Ellis family vineyard which is situated on the ancient Cambrian soils of the Colbinabbin range in the Heathcote wine growing region of Australia. Two special barrels were selected for this premium shiraz. The shiraz was aged for 14 months in new and one year French oak barriques.
Full bodied yet elegant, the aroma displays bright cherry fruit, mint, eucalypt and subtle oak. The palate is well balanced with rip fruit, mild tannins and lingering finish. Further ageing for seven years will continue to integrate the flavours.

The traditional and original expression of our Sangiovese is treated with a stay in mature French oak and held back for a further 6 months longer than the Nuovo. Exactly the same winemaking process has taken place to that of the unoaked expression and although the wines have similarities they have developed their own personalities.

This wine comes from a single block selection from the oldest Shiraz vines in our Camelback vineyard. We have long been convinced that the Block Two produces the best quality Shiraz fruit we have. The Block 2 Shiraz is dark in colour, there are blackberries and violets on the nose. Layers of intense dark berry fruit and spice unfold on the palate, mingled with subtle tannins and a touch of earthiness. French oak enhances the richness of the fruit and adds complexity. Block Two is a wine with structure, length, and fine tannins. It will continue to improve over the next 5 or more years.
